National Cookbook Month & Interlibrary Loan

 by Mary Ellen Valverde (mvalverd@stevens.edu)

Note to reader: although I wrote this blog post in October, I soon realized my post would not be up until November...so hopefully you don’t mind I’m still going to talk about cookbooks especially seeing as Thanksgiving is coming up and the holiday is all about food.

While I was deciding on my next blog topic, my co-workers informed me that October was National Cookbook Month and I got really excited. Who doesn’t love cookbooks? Okay maybe not all college students do - I don’t think I did much cooking either now that I think about it as I only had enough money to make ramen noodles every night in college. But I’m hoping maybe you’d want to check out some cookbooks and maybe try a few recipes at home for Thanksgiving when your parents are buying the groceries or when you get great jobs and make tons of money.

There’s just something about cooking from scratch that gives me a sense of accomplishment once the meal is finished. Plus, cooking for yourself insures you have the quality of ingredients that you want as well as any substitutions that you may need. Being vegan, sometimes finding a cookbook I can use can be a bit more difficult. I don’t eat any animal products (including dairy and eggs) so I like to find cookbooks that use only the products I do eat. While searching our catalog, I found that our library only owned one vegan cookbook - which wasn’t surprising to me as mine is a very specific topic.

The good thing about our library’s catalog is that besides those from Stevens, it also shows books from other libraries around the country which you can request through Interlibrary Loan. I found a few books that looked interesting and decided to do an Interlibrary Loan to check them out before committing to buy one. One book that I found and heard great things about is Veganomicon by Isa Chandra Moskowitz -
it’s supposed to be one of the staple cookbooks for vegans. I also am thinking of checking out
Vegan Cooking for Carnivores by Roberto Martin to make a few things over the holidays that some of my meat eating family members might enjoy as well.

Finally, don't forget that now is the time to get a book or article from Interlibrary Loan or your final papers. We stop taking new requests by the second week of December in order to ensure delivery, so the sooner you get your request in, the better! Have any questions about ILL? Feel free to contact me!

New InterLibrary Loan Policies

The InterLibrary Loan Department of the library is enacting the following new policies, effective immediately. For a listing of all the library's policies, see http://www.stevens.edu/library/about/policies.html.

Late books: Books should be returned by the due date on the ILL book slip. Returning books late jeopardizes our relationship with other lending institutions.

Students: If you do not return the book by the due date you will get 3 emails over a one-week period of time reminding you that your book is late. If the book is not returned by the date indicated in the 3rd email, your student account will be charged a $50 processing fee and a $150 lost book replacement fee. Also, you will be responsible for any late fees incurred from the lending library. If you return the book after the fees have been charged, your student account will be reimbursed the $150 replacement fee. Please be aware that you will not be reimbursed the $50 processing fee. If you are late with an ILL book more than 2 times without contacting us about it, you will lose your ILL privileges.

Books not picked up: ILL books will be at the circulation desk for one week after the arrival notification has been sent, and if they are not claimed during that week, they will be sent back to the lending library. Students will be charged $5 for each book that is not picked up

Recalled books: If a book is recalled by another university, you will be asked to return it to us right away. Since the book is not the property of our library we must abide by the rules of the lending library.

New Online ILL Document Request Form for Students

Attention all students: Getting articles & documents from outside of Stevens just got a lot easier. Interlibrary loan documents can now be requested online through the library’s website. Students can use their campus wide ID and log into our system. The fee for each document request will be taken from your student account. (Up until now, you had to fill out a paper form and bring it with your payment to the Circulation Services desk).

Before submitting your request, please make sure that the library does not already own the document you need. Requests will not be filled for items available at Stevens. You may check which journals we have available by using our Full Text Journal Finder and the iLink online catalog or you can use our Multisearch feature for finding specific articles you need.

We hope you will find that faster and easier document requests will help make your research time much more efficient – it’s the latest of many new, interactive tools on the new, streamlined library website.

Any questions can be directed to Mary Ellen Valverde , Head of Interlibrary Loan and Document Delivery Services.
