A research paper, presentation or poster looks extra special with nice graphics and photos. Luckily, the Internet has a plethora of images to save and use. But beware, visual media like words, carry copyright protections, sometimes specific instructions on use, and need to be cited. This workshop will introduce you to tools to find images on the Internet that are safe to use and how to cite them in your research.

What's Your Impact: Citation Tracking

Your impact as a scholar is partly reflected in the effect your work has on others, as observed through citations. This session will discuss the traditional methods to track how others are citing you through databases as well as "altmetrics," which measure impact in social media.

Graduate Student Research Conference 2011

The Graduate Student Research Conference 2011 (GSRC-2011) is a conference organized and presented by the graduate students in the Charles V. Schaefer, Jr. School of Engineering & Science at Stevens Institute of Technology.

Haitian art exhibit at Hoboken Public Library

The Hoboken Public Library will be hosting a special gallery exhibit featuring photographs and original Haitian artwork provided by Community Development International, which is a non-profit working on sustainable development projects in Haiti, as well as local green community projects in NYC.

Book Sale!

Stop by the Library for our used books sale. The books range from old textbooks to manuals to reports and proceedings covering all areas of engineering, business and technology, with even a few novels thrown in!

Prices are $2 for all hard-bound books and $1 for any softcover book. There may even be some free books hanging around if you ask nicely ;)

Hoboken Public Library, located on the corner of 5th Street and Park Avenue (across from Church Square Park), is a great place to check out popular reading, as well as video games, dvds, e-books and audiobooks.

Citation Software Online Demos

On Tuesday, April 20th, at 11 am, the library has arranged for representatives from two citation management software companies to demonstrate their products (RefWorks and EndNote).

The demonstrations will be available remotely, through WebEx, so you can access them from your own computer. We will also be presenting the demos in the library, in room 208b. A screencast for the open source citation tool Zotero will also be available via the website.

Library Resources

There is a plethora of resources that are available for students to use and reference in the library such as databases, information about companies for job searching, journals, and more. Learning to use these resources is a critical tool for writing research papers.

The library research lecture will teach graduate students how to use library resources to support their papers & projects and to improve their academic writing skills. Students will learn how to find scholarly and professional journal articles & books, how to find company & industry information, how to cite sources properly, and how to use the library website effectively to find high-quality information.

Faculty reception/author celebration

On Wednesday, October 7 from 4 to 6 p.m., the library will host its inaugural fall reception to welcome faculty to the library and celebrate Stevens authors. Books by Stevens authors as well as 900 journal papers from the last few years will be highlighted.

Wine and cheese will be served and it will be a great opportunity for faculty to socialize with colleagues and the library staff.

For planning purposes, faculty members & department heads are encouraged to let us know they're planning to attend by September 25. RSVP here if you would like to attend.

New library website to launch July 1st.

The staff of the S.C. Williams Library is pleased to announce the upcoming launch of its new website planned for July 1, 2008. The new site brings into focus the most important content of the former version and is more intuitive to navigate. We hope you’ll find the new site to be more logically organized – it should make finding the information you need quicker and easier.

The site design focuses on technologies that enable communication and interactivity and simplifies access to resources and services so that using the website for your research is less complicated.

Features of the new site:

• Simple, elegant design


• Greater accessibility of online resources


• Guidance for using library resources (tutorials, subject guides, chat reference via instant messaging, ‘how do I?’ menu, ‘help’ section, ‘ask us’ page)

• Meebo^© instant messaging application on homepage, which allows users to chat with librarians during reference hours without having to log in or sign up for any instant messaging account

• Rotating pictures showcase distinctive pieces of art housed within the library

Halloween fun at the Library!

All day on Wednesday, October 31st, the Library Staff will be giving out free Halloween candy and lollipop ghosts. You can enter to win a $25 gift certificate to Margherita's Pizza and Cafe, located at 8th and Washington in Hoboken! Just look for the orange raffle entry forms available in the Library. If you wear a Halloween costume to the Library on Wednesday, you will get a free gift.

To enter the raffle, just pick up an orange entry form inside the Library, and use one of the recommended research databases (choose one from the list of research databases at http://www.stevens.edu/library/research/azlist.html) to identify a scholarly journal article on the topic of Halloween and write down the journal title, article title, volume, issue, date, and page numbers for the article. Also, tell us which database you used to find the article. Then, just hand in the entry form at the Information Services desk or the Circulation desk, and you will be entered to win the prize!

All students, faculty, and staff are invited and encouraged to stop by the Library on Halloween! We hope to see you there!

Free Concert!

This Friday at 8PM, the Library, in conjunction with the Stevens Philosophy Club, will be hosting a musical performance by The Bloom Equations, featuring a program of opera arias by Mozart, Verdi, Tchaikovsky and more. Light refreshments will be served.
